From the 2008 programme
Next we'll teach you the secrets of output. You'll learn how to use Aperture's automated presets to send countless files at the push of a button. Whether it's email or FTP or delivery on a CD or DVD, Aperture can make short work out of exporting your images. It will also revolutionize your printing, and we'll show you how to make perfect images every single time using Aperture 2's amazing print interface and 16-bit color.
What it still teaches
Email, FTP, CD and DVD: most of the destinations on the 2008 list have gone. Client galleries, shared links and social crops replaced the disc in the mail.
The principle the class taught was the preset. Decide once how a file should be sized, sharpened, named and watermarked for each destination, then apply it without thinking. Aperture's export presets did that for the destinations of the day. The modern list is longer (web gallery, print lab, square post, vertical post, archive master), which makes presets more useful, not less.
Printing is the part that has barely moved. Soft-proof with the paper's profile, let the application manage color rather than the printer driver, and run a small test strip before committing a large sheet. A print shows problems a screen hides, which is reason enough to make one now and then even if most work never leaves a screen.
